Junction Highlights
Our foot traffic has increased tremendously over the past 5 years. We’ve got the great townspeople, the water, hunting, fishing… and we’ve got the Interstate folks as well. It seems like the sky’s the limit for Junction.
Kimble County Top 10
Lovers Leap
Enjoy panoramic views from the top of this limestone bluff that overlooks the South Llano River, with its historic suspension bridge leading into Junction. And in the spring, catch the Easter Pageant, a popular family tradition that takes place annually in the natural amphitheater at the base of Lovers Leap. This local production of the Passion Play has been sponsored by the Junction Men’s Bible Class each year for more than 65 years.
London Hall
Since it opened nearly a century ago, making it one of the oldest dancehalls in Texas, London Hall has featured a number of Texas legends like fiddler Johnny Gimble and Hank Thompson. Today, with live music and dancing every Saturday night, you’ll regularly find undiscovered Texas country talents on the stage. Just 20 miles northeast of Junction on US Highway 377.
Back Door Café
Tucked away behind the mercantile store in the tiny town of Roosevelt, the Back Door Cafe is one of the hidden gems of the Hill Country, offering home-cooked food, gracious and friendly service, occasional live music, and a relaxed, cozy atmosphere. Take the Roosevelt exit off I-10 west of Junction and drive a couple of miles through spectacular countryside until you find the center of town.
South Llano River State Park
Recently designated as a International Dark Sky Park, the South Llano River provides refuge for wildlife and people and offers a wealth of outdoor activities year round, to visitors and locals alike. The park expanded from about 600 acres to 2600 acres in 2011, when the Walter Buck Wild Life Management Area became part of the state park. It hosts more than 50,000 visitors per year that come with their hiking boots, camping gear, and sense of adventure.
South Llano River Paddling Trail
Six miles of the beautiful, spring-fed South Llano River, with several access points along the way. Made possible by a partnership between the City of Junction, Kimble Co., Texas Tech University Center at Junction, Llano River Watershed Alliance, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the trail features quiet pools, riffles, and runs. Be sure to take along fishing gear and binoculars, as the South Llano is home to abundant quantities of the state fish of Texas, the Guadalupe Bass, and offers tremendous birding opportunities as well.
Main Street Parades
Everybody loves a parade, and Junction is no exception! Whether honoring veterans on Memorial Day, celebrating the 4th of July, welcoming the rodeo to town in August, or enjoying the lights and sparkle of Christmas, we shut down traffic on Main Street and everybody comes out from miles around – either to join in the parade themselves, or to wave and cheer from the sidelines.
Issack's Restaurant
Isaack’s vintage neon sign welcoming all and touting “air conditioning” tells you all you need to know about what you’re going to find inside. An abundant menu with all your down-home comfort food favorites, breakfast served all day, generous refills on the coffee and iced tea, and a legendary waitress who’s such a beloved character that she’s been featured by a travel writer in the Dallas Morning News.
Junction Warehouse
The Texas Historical Commission has recently given Holekamp’s Junction Warehouse a “Texas Treasure” business award, recognizing business that have been operated by the same family, in the same location for 75 years or more. Inside, the rich traditions of Kimble County’s roots in ranching and hunting are still very much alive, and if you’re lucky you can find an oldtimer who’s in town to get some feed for the livestock to tell you a story about the days when Junction was the “mohair capital of the world."
Lums BBQ
Lum’s – “Smokin’ the good stuff since ’76” – is beloved of both locals and visitors, and is easily found thanks to the cars and pick-ups that overflow at lunchtime into the Lone Star Gallery’s lot next door. Inside, the line at the counter moves along swiftly as folks choose their favorites from a menu of meats, along with a variety of sides and desserts so abundant that even your vegetarian friend won’t go hungry. A spacious outdoor patio offers additional seating in nice weather, and occasional live music under starry night skies.
Opening day of Hunting Season
Deer hunting has long been an important contributor to the economy of Junction and Kimble County, and on the opening day of hunting season, all the locals roll out the red carpet to welcome the hunters! Offerings of good home-cooked food are an essential part of the festivities whether in Junction, London, or Roosevelt.
We're trying to progress and grow, but we're trying to grow smartly. The whole town still knows whose kids are whose. There's a curfew. We're trying to progress thoughtfully, so it's not just willy-nilly and the next thing you know, we've lost who we are.
